SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Belmont High upset top-seeded Bell, 1-0, in the boys’ City Section soccer final Saturday, and Van Nuys Grant beat San Pedro by the same score to become the second team to win the girls’ championship.

Ana Hufanga of Grant and Jose Salmeron of Belmont had second-half goals to provide all the scoring for the 300 spectators who watched the doubleheader at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.

Hufanga’s goal came four minutes into the second half after Nicole Bucciarelli drove the ball to the top of the San Pedro goal box and passed it to Hufanga. Hufanga made a fake and blasted it home for the Lancers’ first championship in three appearances. They finished 12-3-2.

Salmeron, a striker, scored his 14th goal of the season at the 60-minute mark after receiving a throw-in pass from Nelson Moran. Salmeron’s goal was only the 10th given up by the Eagles all season.

“The way we started the season, we would have never believed we were going to be here,” said Belmont Coach Nancy Carr-Swaim, who guided the Sentinels (10-1-2) to the 1992 final, but lost to Garfield, 2-1. “This is the most well-rounded team that I’ve ever coached.”

The Eagles outshot the Sentinels, 12-8, forcing Belmont goalies Octavio Calvillo and Mario Orellana to make three key saves each.
