The Bassett boys’ and Rio Hondo Prep girls’ basketball teams, the Claremont boys’ and the Pasadena Poly girls’ soccer teams won Southern Section championships last weekend.

Bassett defeated St. Paul, 77-73, to win the Division IV-AA championship. Rio Hondo Prep defeated San Bernardino Christian, 53-43, to win the Division V-A title.

Claremont beat Upland, 2-0, for the Division I soccer title, and Pasadena Poly defeated Chadwick, 4-1, for its fourth consecutive Division IV championship.

Three boys’ basketball teams and one girls’ team from the San Gabriel Valley earned berths in the Southern California Regional of the state tournament that began Tuesday.

San Dimas was defeated by Santa Margarita, 75-73, in a boys’ Division III game, Bassett lost to Santa Clara, 81-53, in Division IV, and Pasadena Poly beat La Jolla The Bishop’s, 58-50, in Division V.

The Rio Hondo Prep girls lost to La Jolla The Bishop’s 60-39, in a Division V game.

Four players from the San Gabriel Valley finished among the top 12 in the state in scoring, according to the Southern Section office.

Jeron Roberts of Charter Oak, who averaged 33.8 points a game, was third. Jeremy Veal of San Dimas was fourth at 30.5, Glenn Ray Johnson of Wilson was fifth at 28.5.

Rico Harris of Temple City, who averaged 25.3 points a game, was 12th.

Boys’ and girls’ soccer players are eligible to apply for $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded by the county Department of Recreation and Parks and Ford Motor Co.

Fifteen scholarships will be awarded during the spring. Criteria include diligence and commitment to soccer, financial need, grade-point average, soccer proficiency and community service.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Mt. San Antonio College will play host to the youth days portion of the annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 8-9.

The youth days, sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation, will involve more than 4,000 children in grades three through nine. The instructional program provides training in track and field and concludes with competition. Participants receive awards, T-shirts and passes to the Mt. SAC Relays.

COLLEGES

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team played Westmont on Wednesday for the championship of the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament. The winner advances to the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

Azusa Pacific defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 128-87, in the semifinals. Ronnie Winbush scored 26 points and Raymond Tutt added 24 for Azusa Pacific.

The Pomona Pitzer men’s and women’s basketball teams were eliminated from the NCAA Division III playoffs in the first round.

Pomona-Pitzer’s men lost to UC San Diego, 67-66, and finished with a 19-7 record. Bill Cover scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer’s women lost to St. Thomas (Minn.), 90-65, and finished 14-11. Sacari Morrison scored 34 points and had 11 rebounds for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team defeated UC Davis on Tuesday in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs and will advance to the NCAA West Regional against Cal State San Bernardino.

Pomona is coming off a 67-59 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the semifinals of the four-team California Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. It was the Broncos first loss in 17 CCAA tournament games.

Bits Sirchia scored 20 points for Pomona. Mildred Conston, the CCAA co-player of the year, had 19 for the Broncos.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team opened CCAA play with a three-game sweep of Cal State San Bernardino.

The Broncos continue their conference schedule with a three-game series against Cal State Los Angeles this weekend.

PREP ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Blanca Fromm, Pasadena Poly and Robert Henson, Bassett-- Fromm, a senior, scored three goals as Pasadena Poly won its fourth consecutive Division IV girls’ soccer championship with a 4-1 victory over Chadwick.

Henson, a senior, scored 29 points to lead Bassett to a 77-73 victory over St. Paul in the Division IV-AA boys’ basketball championship game.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Ronnie Winbush, Azusa Pacific--Winbush, a senior, scored 26 points to lead the Cougars to a 128-87 victory over Point Loma Nazarene in the semifinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament.

MISCELLANY

The Lanterman Developmental Center in Pomona will stage an area Special Olympics track and field meet on Saturday. Volunteers are needed to help stage events and cheer and support competitors. CALENDAR

The East San Gabriel Valley All-Star basketball games will be played March 19 at Glendora High. Ron Rice of Northview will coach the boys’ East team and Tim Stimpfel of Wilson will coach the West. Stu Sims of Covina will coach the girls’ East team and Anne Ellwanger of Nogales will coach the West.

The games will include seniors from high schools from Duarte to Pomona. The girls’ game is at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game is scheduled at 8.

The West San Gabriel Valley All-Star games will be played March 25 at La Canada High. Seniors from Glendale to Monrovia will participate. The girls’ game is at 6, the boys’ game will start at 8.
