PREP ROUNDUP : No. 1 Huntington Beach Easily Wins

Huntington Beach, the top-ranked volleyball team in Division I, easily swept ninth-ranked Newport Harbor, 15-10, 15-8 and 15-11 Wednesday at home.

Mike Grave led the Oilers (1-1) with 14 kills while Mitch McCoy had a game-high 27 for the Sailors (0-2). Greg Slick added 15 kills for Newport Harbor, which played without starting setter Eric Vallely; he sat out with an injured knee.

In other nonleague volleyball:

Dana Hills 3, Woodbridge 0--Jeremy Darner had 14 kills for Dana Hills (4-0), which defeated Woodbridge, 15-8, 16-14, 15-9. Kevin Reid had 13 kills for Woodbridge (0-2).

San Clemente 3, Marina 0--Gabe Gardner had 14 kills at Marina to lead San Clemente, 15-11, 15-13, 15-8, to its third consecutive victory. San Clemente is 3-0.

Fountain Valley 3, Mission Viejo 0--Phil Domingo had a game-high 14 kills to lead Fountain Valley (2-0), 15-6, 15-10, 15-13, over Mission Viejo.

In nonleague baseball:

Magnolia 2, Bolsa Grande 1--Edgar Castenada doubled and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead Magnolia (2-2). Matt Nester (1-1) struck out three and gave up one unearned run in six innings.

Daniel Hendrix had a run-scoring single in the fourth inning and Brian Baughman gave up two unearned runs in five innings for Bolsa Grande (1-2).

In nonleague golf:

Costa Mesa 410, Loara 495--Andrew Zanzig shot a three-over 75 to lead the Mustangs (2-1) at Costa Mesa Golf Club.

Corona del Mar 203, Fountain Valley 228--Billy Sarracino shot two-over 37 and Kevin Walden shot 40 to lead Corona del Mar (3-1) at Newport Beach Country Club. Clay Heneise shot 41 for Fountain Valley.

El Dorado 210, Brea-Olinda 213--Andy Noss shot his best round of the season, a one-over 37 for El Dorado (3-1) at Imperial.

In the Cypress softball tournament:

Foothill 7, Cerritos Gahr 0--Amy Tessman (3-0) struck out nine and Michelle Churnock went two for three with two stolen bases and three runs scored for Foothill (4-0) in a quarterfinal game.

In nonleague softball:

Newport Harbor 4, Costa Mesa 1--Jenny Colclasure pitched a one-hitter and had five strikeouts for host Newport Harbor (3-1).

Orange Lutheran 12, Liberty Christian 2--Loara transfer Michelle Harrison struck out eight and gave up only one earned run for Orange Lutheran (1-0) in its season opener.

St. Margaret’s 11, Riverside Van Horn 0 (5, mercy rule)--Monica Arreola pitched a no-hitter and Monica Girard homered to lead St. Margaret’s (1-1) at home.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Esperanza 88, Canyon 80--Steve Fonda won the 200 freestyle in 1:55.91 and the 100 freestyle at 52.9 to lead Esperanza.

La Habra 98, Whittier California 72--Junior Brian Karol took first in the 100 and 200 freestyle for host La Habra (1-1).

In Sea View League girls’ swimming:

Irvine 112, Corona del Mar 58--Senior Monica Huszcz took two events in the 200 (2:05.33) and 500 freestyle (5:23.19) for Irvine (1-2, 1-0). Wendy O’Brien was also a double winner for the Vaqueros in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Newport Harbor 133, University 37--Rachel Arrow and Melissa Pomeroy each won two events for Newport Harbor (2-0, 1-0).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Canyon 18 1/3, El Dorado 2 2/3--Justin Ayre won, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3 singles and Warren Wang and Andy Choi swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, to lead host Canyon (3-0). El Dorado is 0-3.

El Modena 14, Costa Mesa 4--Morgan Stevens and Terry Truong swept at No. 2 doubles, 7-6, 6-0, 6-2, and Nathan Whitehouse and Nick Beckman won at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 for host El Modena (3-0). Costa Mesa fell to 2-1.

Esperanza 16 1/3, Brea-Olinda 4 2/3--Kevin Lopez won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Tony Hsu and Justin Wellner swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, to lead Esperanza (3-2). Brea-Olinda fell to 1-3.

Estancia 15 2/3, Huntington Beach 5 1/3--Andrew Smith and Brian Dinh won two of three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles for Huntington Beach (1-3). Estancia improved to 2-1.

Irvine 16, Marina 5--No. 2 doubles Sid Khanijou and Jeff Chen combined to earn their first sweep for Irvine (2-1).
