OUTLOOK

Wren takes over the head coaching job, moving up from JV, and he has some big shoes to fill after Ron Drake’s resignation at the end of last season. Drake was at Mission Viejo for 16 years and posted a 241-130 record. He led his teams to three 20-win seasons. The Diablos are in one of the best leagues in the county and they will struggle to repeat their third-place finish of last season. They return only seven players, four starters. Dorn and Kalklosh will need to step up and take over the leadership of this team. Marian, a freshman transfer from Mater Dei, will be missed by the Monarchs and the Diablos should be able to put him to use quickly on the mound and at first base. The Diablos are strong up the middle with Dorn, Reinhart and Higashi, but that won’t be enough against powerhouses like Capistrano Valley and Dana Hills. The Diablos need time and some playing experience, which they will get fast once league play begins.
