At various times Thursday night, Campbell Hall High played at its peak and at its worst in a Southern Regional Division V semifinal against Pacific Hills.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, the worst came in the final minutes.

Senior forward Danny Brummel hit a 10-foot bank shot as the buzzer sounded to give Pacific Hills a 44-42 victory at Occidental College.

Campbell Hall, the Southern Section Division V-AA champion, did not score in the final 4:33, blowing a nine-point lead. The Vikings also turned the ball over four times in the final two minutes.

The final turnover occurred when point guard Damon Glymph was called for traveling in the backcourt with four seconds to play while being closely guarded by two defenders.

Pacific Hills Coach John Bobich called for a lob play from Bryan Sterling underneath the basket to Brummel. Sterling (15 points) had tied the score seconds earlier on a fadeaway jump shot.

Campbell Hall countered by having 6-foot-10 center Alex Lopez (18 points) guard the throw-in, but Sterling lobbed the ball perfectly to Brummel.

“I knew if we stayed within striking distance we would have a chance,” Brummel said. “When I let it go the angle looked good to bank in,”

Campbell Hall played a superb first half, taking a 29-18 lead. And Pacific Hills still trailed, 42-33, with 4:33 to play after Campbell Hall’s Simeon Woodall (11 points) hit one of two free throws.

The Vikings attempted only three shots the rest of the game, partly because of the turnovers and partly in a conscious effort to slow the tempo.

“We just didn’t match their effort or level of concentration over the last few minutes,” Campbell Hall Coach Jon Palarz said.

After falling behind, 6-0, in the opening minute, the Vikings outscored Pacific Hills, 29-12, the rest of the first half. The Vikings used a trap defense to force six turnovers over a four-minute span late in the second quarter.

Glymph was the catalyst for the defensive effort. He came off the bench and had three steals, all of which led to baskets or opportunities at the foul line.

The run ended at the half, when little-used sophomore Justin Wallace hit an 18-footer as the buzzer sounded.

Campbell Hall was not called for a personal foul until late in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Brummel picked up his third foul in the second quarter.

Pacific Hills (23-9) rebounded behind Brummel and Sterling to pull within 35-33 early in the fourth quarter before Lopez scored six straight points, setting the stage for the comeback.

The Vikings (24-9) had trouble taking care of the ball in the second half, committing 11 turnovers.

“We had a jump on them at halftime,” Wallace said. “It’s just a shame we had to play our best quarter and our worst quarter in the same game.”
