PREP ROUNDUP : Ocean View Stops Irvine With Ponce’s No-Hitter

Kathy Ponce pitched a no-hitter to help Ocean View beat Irvine, 2-0, in a semifinal of the Laguna Hills softball tournament Wednesday at Alicia Park in Mission Viejo.

Ponce (7-1) had seven strikeouts.

Teresa Falcone and Jennifer Hatcher each drove in a run for Ocean View (7-1) in the second inning. Ocean View meets Marina in the championship game at 7:15 tonight.

In the other Laguna Hills tournament semifinal:

Marina 6, Woodbridge 3--Marcy Crouch gave up two hits and no runs in four innings of relief to get the victory for Marina (4-0). Crouch is 3-0. Heather Williams had two hits, including a double, for Marina.

In nonleague softball:

Huntington Beach 3, Los Alamitos 0--The Oilers scored three in the top of the seventh inning and defeated Los Alamitos (9-1), the second-ranked team in Division I. Stefanie Noffsinger (2-0) pitched a one-hitter, striking out five, for the Oilers (4-1).

Newport Harbor 7, Estancia 3--Jennie Colclasure pitched a three-hitter for Newport Harbor (4-2).

Aliso Niguel 20, Southern California Christian 3 (5, mercy)--Stefanie Ruiz went four for four, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs and Traci Barney went four for five and scored twice for Aliso Niguel (4-4).

Rancho Alamitos 9, Century 0 (6, mercy)--Jill Otto had a no-hitter, striking out 15 of 19 batters, and hit a home run for host Rancho Alamitos.

In nonleague baseball:

San Clemente 8, Santa Margarita 7--Josh Danson squeezed home Paul Anderson with the winning run in the sixth inning for San Clemente (4-2). Winning pitcher Chad Wanders (3-0) gave up only two hits after the Eagles’ six-run first inning. He also hit two home runs.

Villa Park 4, Apple Valley 1--Jeremy Pari had two RBI singles and Matt Parker (1-1) struck out five in five innings for Villa Park (4-2).

In Sea View League golf:

University 213, Tustin 221--Bill Bodensteiner and Bret Skinner each shot three-over-par 39 at Tustin Ranch for University.

In nonleague golf:

Long Beach Wilson 191, Edison 212--David Searle shot three-over 39 for Edison (4-2) at Long Beach Recreation Park.

Orange 193, La Quinta 223--Brady Richards shot three-under 33 to lead Orange (4-2-1) at Riverview.

San Clemente 414, Fallbrook 435--Tom Larsen shot nine-over 81 and Mike Zapel shot 82 to lead San Clemente (3-0) at Pacific Country Club and Pala Mesa Golf Course.

Sunny Hills 397, Brea-Olinda 412--Terry Noe shot four-over 76 to lead Sunny Hills (3-0). Mike Peterson shot 77 for Brea-Olinda (2-1).

Westminster 228, Cypress 235--Duncan Stewart shot five-over 40 to lead Westminster (4-4) at Cypress Golf Club.

Trabuco Hills 420, Corona del Mar 425--Kevin Rodgers shot six-over 78 for Trabuco Hills in an 18-hole match that was played at Coto de Caza and Newport Beach country clubs.

Valencia 412, El Dorado 424--John Lee shot one-over 73 to lead Valencia (3-2) at Western Hills.

In Sea View League girls’ swimming:

Irvine 108, Newport Harbor 62--The 400 freestyle relay team of Monica Huszcz, Molly Zak, Lana Kraus and Wendy O’Brien won for Irvine (2-2, 2-0).

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

Cypress 79, Western 28--Cypress’ Jimmy Hutsell won the 440 in 50.6, beating Western’s Josh Christianson, who finished in 51.6.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Scott Lister had 20 kills for Capistrano Valley in the 15-9, 15-7, 15-9 victory.
