ROUNDUP : 12 Montclair Prep Errors Ease Moorpark’s 19-6 Win

Montclair Prep made 12 errors, kicking its way to a 19-6 loss to Moorpark in a nonleague baseball game Wednesday at the Mission Hills Little League field.

The Musketeers (2-1) scored 12 unearned runs. Their offensive leaders were Rick Collier and Bill Finnerty, who each had three hits. Craig Weaver hit a grand slam, and Andy Huisenga had two doubles.

Scott Stark had two doubles for Montclair Prep (5-2), and Darrell Dent, Matt Muler and Andrew Miller each homered for the Mounties.

Newbury Park 7, Dos Pueblos 0--Ray Clinton pitched a three-hitter, striking out seven and walking none for the host Panthers (4-3) in a nonleague game. Clinton (1-2) became the first Newbury Park pitcher other than Keith Smith to win a game this season.

Panther outfielder Rich Adams was three for four with a double and three runs scored.

Chaminade 11, Harvard-Westlake 3--Casey Cote hit two home runs and drove in four to lead the Eagles (4-2, 1-0) in a Mission League opener at Franklin Field.

Cote and Brandon Gray each hit three-run homers in a nine-run fourth inning. The inning was set up with three walks and three errors. Joel Orme (2-1) picked up the victory for Chaminade, yielding three runs in five innings. Harvard (3-3, 0-1) made six errors.

Burroughs 9, Muir 5--Chris Centeno was two for three and Steve Barrett added two RBIs to lead the host Indians (4-3) in a nonleague game.

Saugus 17, Quartz Hill 8--Shortstop Danny Cato and first baseman Brandon Hernandez each had three hits, including three-run home runs, for the visiting Centurions (5-3) in a nonleague game. Third baseman Dennis Gill added three RBIs on two doubles for Saugus.

Shorstop Al Miller led Quartz Hill with two doubles and two walks.

Hesperia 6, Highland 5--Reliever Ruben Escobar retired Denver Martinez on a game-ending bases-loaded grounder to second in the nonleague game at Hesperia. Highland (1-3) had rallied for three runs in the inning. Martinez was two for four and drove in two runs.

Calabasas 16, St. Bonaventure 8--The Coyotes won a mistake-plagued nonleague game that featured 14 errors and 22 walks at St. Bonaventure (3-4).

Each team committed seven errors and Seraph pitchers issued 18 walks.

Anthony Kaufman (2-0) earned the victory for Calabasas (5-0). First baseman Billy Hoover went three for five, scored three runs and drove in three runs.

Notre Dame 8, Loyola 2--Right fielder Jon Lichterman hit a three-run home run and Rich Igou struck out 10 to lead the visiting Knights (5-1, 1-0) in a Mission League opener. Third baseman Allen Jerkens had two hits, including a double, for Notre Dame. Igou (2-1) pitched a three-hitter.

Bell-Jeff 8, St. Genevieve 7--Jeff Girard drove in the tie-breaking run for Bell-Jeff (1-4) with a single in the fifth inning of an L.A. Baptist tournament consolation game. Jerry Villanea had two doubles and an RBI for the Guards.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Point Loma Nazarene 2-6, The Master’s 0-3--The Mustangs were swept in an NAIA District 3 doubleheader at The Master’s (6-13-2). Mustang pitchers Mark Balch (0-3) and Chris Beck (2-3) were the losers. Catcher Jeff Tomlinson singled twice in the first game and Steve Smith got two hits in the second game.

Cerro Coso 3, Mission 1--Right-hander Raymond Rivera struck out 12 and scattered seven hits while going the distance for visiting Cerro Coso (7-10, 6-3) in a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

Mission (11-10, 6-6) scored its only run on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice in the first inning.

SOFTBALL

Alemany 3, Paraclete 2--Sonja Maldonado’s eighth-inning bases-loaded infield single drove in Alba Cano with the winning run in the nonleague game.

Angela Rivera was two for four, including a double, and drove in a run for Alemany (4-1). Junior right-hander Sophie Contreras (4-1) went the distance, striking out five.

Fountain Valley 7, Saugus 1--Jamie Gillies gave up two runs in three innings, but reliever Nicole Giordano surrendered five in the seventh of the fifth-place game at the Laguna Hills tournament. The Centurions (11-2) have lost two in a row.
