COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Rips Explosive Rancho Santiago

Toby Sanchez set a school record with three home runs, but Rancho Santiago and ace pitcher Brian Hoalton were upset by Golden West, 12-7, Saturday in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game at Rancho Santiago.

Sanchez, who has seven homers this season, finished with six runs batted in. It was the second loss for Hoalton (5-2), who had begun his community college pitching career with 17 consecutive victories over two seasons.

Dan Flanagan was two for five with three RBIs for Golden West (11-12, 5-7). Rancho Santiago is 20-6 and 6-4.

In other Orange Empire Conference baseball games:

Fullerton 12, Cypress 8--Chad Smith had three hits and drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, as Fullerton (12-11-1, 6-6) defeated Cypress (20-6, 7-3). Mark Veronda had four hits for the Hornets, who rallied from a 5-1 deficit. Mark Selway had a big day for the Chargers with a home run, two singles, a double and five RBIs.

Orange Coast 3, Saddleback 2--Orange Coast (4-16, 1-11) ended a 13-game losing streak as George Wise pitched a complete-game seven-hitter over Saddleback (12-8-1, 7-5). Kerry Cosgrove got three hits, including two doubles and two RBIs. Richard Ernst had two hits, including a triple, and scored a run, and Mando Fonseca got two hits and scored a run. Tim Wolter had three hits including a double and two RBIs for Saddleback.

At the Golden West Easter Invitational swim meet:

Koerner sweeps freestyle sprints--Chris Koerner won the 50 freestyle (21.92), 100 freestyle (48.61), and 200 freestyle (1:47.93) for Golden West.
