Athletes of the Week : Dan Styles : Laguna Beach, Jr. : Volleyball / Outside hitter

Styles, who has the highest amateur beach volleyball rating, is honing his indoor game, and Laguna Beach Coach Michael Soylular says he is one of the best swing hitters around. Last week, Styles made believers out of Laguna Hills, Trabuco Hills and Dana Hills. Friday night against Dana Hills, then the top-ranked team in the county, Styles had 21 kills in a four-game victory. He had 14 kills in a three-game sweep of Trabuco Hills and a sweep of Laguna Hills. The Artists (5-0), who were ranked third in the county last week, are now No. 2.

Other Notables: * Mike Hessman, Mater Dei, pitched four-hitter in 7-1 victory over then-No. 1 Capistrano Valley. Had two-run homer in a victory over Mission Viejo.

* Ryan Sauers, Laguna Beach, pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over Kennedy.

* Joe Reynoza, El Modena, had 45 kills in a five-game volleyball victory over Valencia.

* Jeff Ritter, Brea-Olinda, won the 50 freestyle in 23.27 seconds and the 100 free in 50.71 at the Sonora Invitational. He’s also undefeated in dual meets.
