NEWPORT BEACH — Seniors Jed Weinstein and Paul Fruchbom, pairing up for the first time since they were freshmen, won three doubles sets to lead Corona del Mar to an 11-10 victory over visiting University in a Sea View League boys’ tennis match Wednesday.
The Sea Kings, 15 2/3-5 2/3 losers to University the first time the teams met, won three singles and six doubles sets to pull out the victory.
Weinstein and Fruchbom won 6-1, 7-5, 6-2. Roberto Intriago, who normally is paired with Fruchbom, joined Tyler Stonebreaker for a pair of victories, 7-5, 6-2, and Doug Smith and Mike Feyka won, 6-4, for Corona del Mar (10-2, 7-1), which moved into a tie for first with University (9-2, 7-1).
Because doubles victories are worth 1 1/3, Corona del Mar Coach Tim Mang shuffled his lineup and it worked.
“I was hoping (University coach) Josh (Davis) would move Jason Meyers to doubles, giving our singles a chance,” Mang said.
Meyers, the Trojans’ top player, ended up losing two doubles sets.
Three sets went to 7-5 with Corona del Mar winning all three on service breaks in the final game.
