COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Olsen Helps Titans Rout UNLV, 20-1

Behind D.C. Olsen and Tony Miranda, Cal State Fullerton pounded Nevada Las Vegas, 20-1, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Fullerton.

Olsen went three for five with two homers (one grand slam), a double and seven runs batted in for Fullerton (30-8, 8-3).

Miranda hit a leadoff homer, his second, in the sixth and finished three for five with three RBIs.

Titan pitcher Matt Wagner improved to 9-0, pitching seven innings, allowing only three hits and striking out 10.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 6-4, Westmont 3-3--Jason Brissey hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the second game to lead Southern California College to the upset sweep of first-place Westmont (20-13, 8-5).

The Vanguards are 15-22, 5-8.

In Big West softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1-1, Hawaii 0-0--Fullerton manufactured runs in the bottom of the final inning of each game to upset eighth-ranked Hawaii in both ends of a doubleheader at Hawaii.

Fullerton, the home team because the entire season series was played this week in Hawaii to save travel costs, improved to 20-25, 9-9 in the Big West. Hawaii is 40-9 and 16-4.

Jennifer Mortensen (13-14) won both games, the second with five innings of relief. She also scored the winning run in the second game, singling to open the sixth, going to second on a groundout, third on a single and scoring on a wild pitch.

Fullerton scored the only run in the eight-inning first game without the benefit of a hit. Laurie LoForti reached base on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on another wild pitch. Mortensen pitched a three-hitter, striking out five and walking one.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 5-4, Azusa Pacific 4-0--Amy Lewis had two hits and three RBIs in the two games for SCC, and she drove in the winning run in the first game. Carrie Nelson added three hits and three runs scored for SCC (36-7, 12-2).
