Tate Signs Letter of Intent With Irvine

Ventura College basketball player Michael Tate, who helped lead the Pirates to the junior college state championship game, signed a letter of intent Monday to play for UC Irvine.
Tate, a 6-5 sophomore, averaged 13 points and 9.1 rebounds a game for Ventura, and was named to the All-Western State Conference team and the state championship all-tournament team.
Tate also considered Utah, San Diego State, Utah State and Pacific.
Softball
Notre Dame High pitcher Crista Corpening signed a letter of intent to play softball for Boston College.
Corpening (4-6), a right-hander, also considered San Diego State and UC Davis.

Monroe 11, North Hollywood 2--Viking ace Joel Zamudio returned from a 13-day absence and pitched five hitless innings for Monroe (4-8, 3-4) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Zamudio, who experienced soreness in his right shoulder nearly two weeks ago, was replaced after throwing his limit of 75 pitches.
Sylmar 8, Van Nuys 0--The Spartans (16-3, 7-0) parlayed six hits and two errors into a seven-run sixth inning in a Valley Pac-8 game at Van Nuys.
Carlos Velazco (7-1), who had a run-scoring double in the sixth, pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven.
Poly 5, Canoga Park 0--Senior right-hander Jerry Delgado did not give up a hit through 6 1/3 innings before surrendering a single to Javier Vasquez in a Valley Pac-8 game at Poly.
Delgado (4-0) finished with a one-hitter. He walked one and struck out one. Jaime Cerna went three for three and drove in a run for Poly (14-2, 6-1). Sam Vizcarra hit two doubles and Gowdy Martinez went two for three.
Grant 6, Birmingham 4--Marc Scorza’s two-run triple keyed a four-run first inning and Grant (8-5, 5-2) held on to beat Birmingham (6-11, 2-5) in a Valley Pac-8 game.
Newbury Park 8, Agoura 3--Jeff Bennett and Rich Adams each homered and drove in three runs to lead the Panthers (13-4, 6-0) in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.
Royal 4, Thousand Oaks 2--Benny Lemos drove in three runs, including the go-ahead score in the sixth inning, in a Marmonte League game at Royal.
Maki Kramer (7-0) pitched a three-hitter. He allowed one earned run and struck out seven for Royal (11-5, 4-2).
Westlake 10, Channel Islands 7--Dave Bartlestone had two hits and drove in two runs for Westlake (11-7, 2-3) in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.
