Stanford’s Matt Fuerbringer, a former Estancia High standout, was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s volleyball freshman of the year, the conference announced.
Fuerbringer, a 6-foot-7 middle blocker, also was named to the all-conference second team with Pepperdine’s Dain Blanton, the 1990 Times’ Orange County player of the year at Laguna Beach.
UCLA freshman Paul Nihipali (Esperanza) and Long Beach State junior Martin Wagner (University High) were named to the third team. UCLA’s Jeff Nygaard was the conference’s player of the year and UCLA’s Al Scates was coach of the year.
