HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Abeyta Finishes No-Hitter That Mitchell Starts

Brandon Mitchell and Rene Abeyta of Village Christian combined on a no-hitter against Marshall Fundamental for a 4-0 victory in an Alpha League game at Village Christian.

Mitchell (4-0) allowed two walks and struck out four in the first four innings. Abeyta pitched the last three innings, striking out three and walking three.

Village Christian Coach Mike Henzie said he did not realize Mitchell was pitching a no-hitter when he pulled him.

Jason Robitaille went three for four with two doubles and scored two runs for the Crusaders, who turned four double plays to help preserve the shutout.

Rio Mesa 13, Buena 3--Left fielder Charlie Boch drove in seven runs with three hits for the Spartans in a Channel League game. Boch tripled in the second inning with the bases loaded, hit a two-run homer in the fifth and singled home two runs in the fifth.

The victory broke a tie for first place between Rio Mesa (13-5, 6-2 in league play) and the Bulldogs (10-7, 5-3).

Palmdale 8, Quartz Hill 2--David Glick (5-1) struck out 16 and pitched a complete game, allowing six hits. Chris Paxton hit a three-run homer in the first inning, his fourth, to give Palmdale a 3-0 lead.

Moorpark 9, Nordhoff 1--Mike Vasquez struck out 15 while scattering four hits and two walks for Moorpark (15-3, 7-0) in a Frontier League game.

Craig Weaver hit a three-run homer in the third inning and had four RBIs.

Thousand Oaks 13, Agoura 6--Eric Soliz had four hits and Thousand Oaks pounded out 14 hits in a Marmonte league game at Agoura. Kevin Sass had three hits for Agoura, including a grand slam in the first inning.

Newbury Park 6, Channel Islands 4--Newbury Park (15-4, 8-0) won at Channel Islands to remain undefeated in Marmonte League play.

Notre Dame 5, Crespi 0--Andy Lutz (4-0) allowed four hits, walked four and struck out 11 in six innings to pace the Knights (13-4, 7-1) against Crespi (12-7, 4-4) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Jon Lichterman and Justin Bunch each had two hits for Notre Dame.

Crescenta Valley 3, Glendale 0--Jim Parque (8-1) pitched a one-hitter to pace the Falcons (12-3, 9-0) in a Pacific League game.

Burbank 5, Canyon 4--Eric Beardsley had two hits and an RBI. He also stole home in the first inning to lead the Bulldogs (7-9, 2-4) in a Foothill League game.

Calabasas 2, Santa Clara 0--Josh Morton, Sam Rutherford and Darin Reisman each had two hits to pace the Coyotes (13-3, 5-2) in a Frontier League game at Calabasas.

Bell-Jeff 17, Cantwell 14--Jesse Llamas hit his third home run and the Guards overcame six errors to win a Camino Real League game. Mike Pawlik went the distance for Bell-Jeff, allowing only one earned run. Bell-Jeff hit three home runs in the second inning, including Josh Readman’s grand slam.

Camarillo 5, Royal 3--Shawn Fossen hit his third home run but it wasn’t enough as the Highlanders dropped a Marmonte League game to Camarillo.

Nathan Kaup went the distance for Camarillo.

Simi Valley 12, Westlake 0--Brian Kavanagh’s third home run--a grand slam--sparked an eight-run second inning for Simi Valley (14-4, 6-2) in a Marmonte League game.

Bill Scheffels struck out four, walked three and scattered four hits.

SOFTBALL

Louisville 1, St. Bernard 0--Lindsay Harris struck out 16 batters in a Mission League game. Melissa Enteranta scored the winning run for Louisville (9-3, 4-3) in the top of the seventh inning.

Alemany 3, Chaminade 0--Tammy Alcantar’s triple in the top of the 11th broke up a scoreless game. Sophie Contreraz went the distance for Alemany (14-2, 7-0) in the Mission League game, scattering three hits and striking out seven.

Village Christian 27, Marshall Fundamental 3--Pam Sholer, in her first high school start, pitched a no-hitter for Village Christian (7-6, 3-2) on the same day that Mitchell and Abeyta combined for a baseball no-hitter for the Crusaders.

The freshman struck out seven and walked 11, while her teammates backed her with 17 singles.

Santa Clara 7, Calabasas 1--Harmony Crutcher hit a home run and Jolana Ramirez held Calabasas (13-3, 5-2) to two hits in the Frontier league game.

SWIMMING

Thousand Oaks 114, Royal 72 (boys), Royal 104, Thousand Oaks 80 (girls)--Senior Daniel Burbach won four events, including two relays, as the Lancer boys broke a first-place tie with Royal and moved closer to a 12th consecutive Marmonte League title.

In the girls’ meet, nine of the 11 events produced qualifiers for the Southern Section Division I championships.
