ROUNDUP : Mission Celebrates First Title With Fireworks Show, 20-11
Dereck Ornelas hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to lead Mission College to a 20-11 victory over Cerro Coso on Wednesday at Ridgecrest, clinching its first Southern California Athletic Conference baseball championship. Raymond Rivera pitched a complete game for Mission (25-15, 17-7 in conference play) and set a school record with his 12th victory of the season.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Camarillo 9, Newbury Park 2--Eric Jue was three for four, including a grand slam, to lead the Scorpions (9-9, 4-4) in a Marmonte League upset.
Royal 13, Simi Valley 5--Joel Mellinger was three for three with six runs batted in to lead the Highlanders (12-7, 5-4) in a Marmonte League game.
Sylmar 9, North Hollywood 6--Hiram Damwijk’s sacrifice fly snapped a 5-5 tie during a four-run fifth for the Spartans (18-3, 9-0) in an East Valley League game.
Palmdale 9, Littlerock 0--Falcon left-hander David Glick (6-1) struck out 15 and walked none in a Golden League game at Littlerock.
Glick, who struck out 16 in his previous start, took a perfect game into the seventh and finished with a two-hitter.
Saugus 6, Burbank 0--Jeff Brown hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh to cap a five-run uprising by the Centurions (13-5-1, 5-2) in a Foothill League game at Burbank.
Channel Islands 2, Thousand Oaks 0--Rene Sanchez (4-2) pitched a four-hitter and Ysidro Alfaro hit a home run for the Raiders (11-8, 5-4) in a Marmonte League game.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Alemany 12, St. Bernard 0--Sophie Contreraz (15-2) pitched a no-hitter and struck out 13 in a six-inning Mission League game.
Crescenta Valley 17, Pasadena 0--Danielle Ferriera and Kim Scott combined on a no-hitter for the Falcons (17-2, 4-1) in a Pacific League game shortened to five innings by rain.
Hoover 11, Muir 0--Tina Kinney pitched her second no-hitter of the season in a five-inning, rain-shortened Pacific League game.
