BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : DeShields Faces Decision on DL

Pending an examination by Dr. Michael Mellman this morning, the Dodgers might be forced to put Delino DeShields on the disabled list, Executive Vice President Fred Claire said.

“If Dr. Mellman tells us that Delino needs to be out another four days to a week, then we’ll make the move and bring a player up,” Claire said.

“With each day that he misses, once he starts getting ready it makes it that much longer.”

DeShields continued to experience headaches Wednesday from the concussion suffered in Saturday night’s collision with Raul Mondesi. They eased up during the day, Claire said, but he definitely will not leave with the Dodgers for New York this morning.

Chan Ho Park, making his second start for San Antonio, shut out Midland for 4 2/3 innings. He gave up four hits and two walks, and struck out seven. Park has pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings in the Texas League, striking out 14 and giving up six hits. He makes his next start Monday, with Claire attending. . . . . Mike Piazza drew a rest Wednesday night. He is batting .383 over the last 11 games, but Manager Tom Lasorda said Piazza still seems to be trying too hard. “I don’t think he’s pressing,” Lasorda said. “The word I would use is anxious. He’s still too anxious.” . . . . Lasorda operated out of the third-base coaching box, replacing Joe Amalfitano, home with a cold.
