Three seniors from the San Gabriel Valley have been selected to participate in the 43rd annual Shrine all-star football game that will be played July 23 at Citrus College.

Bishop Amat running back Rodney Sermons, Ganesha defensive lineman Pene Talamaiveo and Muir defensive back Kenny Haslip will be part of the 32-player South team that will compete against some of the best players from Northern California.

Sermons was one of the state’s most versatile backs and helped lead Bishop Amat to the 1992 Division I championship. Talamaiveo was a dominant pass rusher throughout his career, and Haslip was one of the top kick returners in the state.

Karen Bono and Amy Shepherd of the Arcadia High softball team have signed national letters of intent to play collegiately next year.

Bono, a shortstop, will attend Utah. Shepherd, a catcher, will attend Chaminade in Hawaii.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Athletes from Citrus, Mt. San Antonio and Pasadena City colleges will participate in the Southern California Regional track and field prelims Saturday in San Diego.

Citrus, which won the men’s and women’s team championship in the Foothill Conference, qualified 14 men and 12 women for the prelims.

The Owl men are led by conference champions Joe Garcia, who won the 800 meters, George Gutierrez (3,000 steeplechase), Herman Covarrubias (400 hurdles), Jaime Villalobos (shotput and discus) and Jason Cetina (javelin).

The Citrus women’s conference champions include Nakiya Davis (100 meters) Lataya Woods (200), Purple Johnson (800), Laura Bermudez (1,600 and 3,000), Nicole Joslin (100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump), Erika Spencer (400 hurdles), Tamika Medcalf (high jump) and Laurie Wilson (high jump).

Mt. SAC is led by South Coast Conference champions Angel Martinez (1,500 and 800), Gary Mitchell (5,000), Bryan Contreras (3,000 steeplechase), Luis Baca (10,000) and Rudy Davila (javelin). Women’s conference champions include Saki Middleton (100 and 200), Nichole Irving (long jump) and Suzette Whitaker (discus).

R.J. Gomez of Citrus was named most valuable golfer in the Foothill Conference after leading the Owls to a third-place finish at the conference championships.

Gomez, Mark Watson, Kevin Keller and Gaku Nakai finished behind champion College of the Desert and Rio Hondo.

COLLEGES

Occidental College cross-country runners Alexis Kays, Karen Molinder and Richard Reese were named academic all-Americans by the Cross-Country Coaches Assn.

Kays, a sophomore chemistry major who graduated from Claremont High, and Molinder, a sophomore biology major who graduated from Western Christian High, were part of an Occidental team that compiled a grade-point average of 3.67, which ranked fourth nationally among 78 teams.

Reese, a sophomore English major who graduated from La Puente High, is part of an Occidental men’s team that compiled a 3.46 GPA, which ranked sixth among 61 teams.

Third-ranked Cal Poly Pomona is playing host to the NCAA Division II women’s tennis championships beginning Friday at the Industry Hills Sheraton Resort.

Pomona finished the regular season with a 19-1-1 record. The Broncos have won five national titles. Other teams participating in the team competition include North Florida, Northern Colorado, Pace University, Grand Canyon, Air Force Academy, UC Davis and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The second-seeded Azusa Pacific softball team opens play in the three-team National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 tournament Friday against No. 3 Cal Baptist in Costa Mesa.

The loser of that game plays top-seeded Southern California College in the double elimimination tournament.

Azusa Pacific, making its fourth consecutive appearance in the district tournament, is led by freshman Dawn Castaneda, who is batting .426. Liz Campbell is batting .362 and April Reed is batting .359.

A 3,200-meter relay team consisting of Tony Bergman, Jon Colleti, Anthony Fischer and Erik Starkey established a school record last weekend at the Penn Relays at Philadelphia.

The quartet finished in 9 minutes 35.77 seconds, eclipsing the mark of 9:43 set in 1989. It was the first appearance by Azusa Pacific runners at the Penn Relays.

The Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team finished second at the NAIA District 3 tournament, but failed to qualify for its first appearance at the national tournament.

Point Loma Nazarene edged Azusa Pacific, 21-17, to gain the berth.

Danielle Jorgenson, who as an interim coach guided the Azusa Pacific women’s basketball team to a 21-10 record last season, has been named full-time head coach.

Jorgenson, 25, is a graduate of Biola.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Tony Skogen, San Marino--Skogen had 20 kills as San Marino clinched its second consecutive Rio Hondo League volleyball championship with a four-set victory over South Pasadena.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Angel Martinez, Mt. San Antonio College--Martinez, a sophomore from San Gabriel, won the 1,500- and the 800-meter events at the South Coast Conference championship meet.

MISCELLANY

The public is invited to participate in two grass volleyball tournaments that will be staged at Azusa Pacific University. Pairs competition in men’s A, men’s B, women’s A and co-ed divisions are scheduled for Saturday and June 16. Entry fee is $15 a team in advance, $17 on the day of the tournament.
