Foothill’s Hay Picks Stanford; Weaver Chooses Massachusetts

David Hay of Foothill announced he will attend Stanford and play water polo, Foothill Coach Jim Brumm said Tuesday.

Hay, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound two-meter man, was selected Century League player of the year the last two seasons. He also earned first-team All-Southern Section Division I honors this season.

Hay’s teammate, Cabot Weaver, will attend Massachusetts to play water polo, Brumm said.

Weaver, a two-meter defender, will first go to New Zealand for a year on an exchange-student program before enrolling, Brumm said. Weaver was a second-team Division I selection.

Diver Tyce Routson of El Toro has signed a letter of intent with Miami. He won the Southern Section Division I diving championship in 1992 and has trained with the Mission Viejo Nadadores the last four years.

Chris Jacobson, a 6-foot-9 middle blocker from El Toro High, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Pepperdine.

Kari Kron, a 6-2 forward from Washington (Iowa) High, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Cal State Fullerton, Titan Coach Debbie Ayres said.

Kron averaged 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds. She shot .599 from the field. Kron is Fullerton’s first women’s basketball signing this year.

Southern California College pitcher Jeff Beckley was named a first-team All-NAIA District 3 selection. Beckley, a junior from Trabuco Hills High, was 5-7 with a 2.57 earned-run average. He struck out 86 and walked 24 in 117 innings. He also was an All-Golden State Athletic Conference pick.

Concordia outfielders Dustyn Benedict, a junior from Pasadena, and Doug Senne, a junior from Orange Lutheran, were honorable mention selections. Benedict batted .310, and Senne batted .318.

Southern California College’s Jason Brissey, a senior from Huntington Beach High, and Concordia’s Jake Miller, a junior from Salinas, were all-conference picks. Brissey batted .311. Miller was 6-5 with a 2.70 ERA.

Derek Ho and Kelly Slater are scheduled to compete in the Bud Pro Surfing tour stop at Huntington State Beach, which begins at 7 a.m. today on the north side of the Santa Ana river jetties.

Ho, the 1993 Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ world champion, and Slater, the 1992 champion, are among more than 150 competitors in the five-day tournament, which ends Sunday.

Also scheduled to compete: Former U.S. champion Shane Beschen of San Clemente, Cardiff’s Rob Machado, Carlsbad’s Taylor Knox and Dana Point’s Pat O’Connell.

Chris Brown of Santa Barbara leads the tour’s point standings with 2,415, followed by Slater (1,950) and Newport Beach’s Richie Collins (1,780).

Competition begins each day at 7 a.m.
