COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Works, Lopez Help Cypress Win Twice in Softball Playoffs

Share

Sara Works performed plenty of heroic acts this spring in leading the Cypress women’s basketball team to the State tournament.

Now Works is helping the softball team move in that direction. Her pinch-hit double broke a tie and gave Cypress a 4-3 victory over El Camino in the second round of the Southern California playoffs Friday at Cypress.

Works came up with two outs and drove the ball into the gap in right center to score Sonya Fellows. Jennifer Allchin had started the seventh with a single but was forced by Fellows. Kristi Krebs sacrificed Fellows to second, bringing up Works.

“I was thinking double into right center,” Cypress Coach Brad Pickler said. “Sometimes you can just see it in your mind.”

The double Pickler didn’t plan on came in the top of the seventh. El Camino’s Jennifer Dessert lined a two-run double into right center to tie it, 3-3. Sherry Thomas had singled in a run in the inning for El Camino (21-18).

Cypress (42-15) had beaten Pasadena, 4-0, earlier in the day and needs one victory today to advance to the State tournament for the sixth consecutive season. Cypress won the State title in 1991.

Jenny Lopez (21-9) pitched complete games in both Cypress victories.

Antelope Valley, which lost to El Camino, 2-0, in eight innings Friday, plays Pasadena at 10 a.m.

The winner plays El Camino at noon and the winner of that game meets Cypress at 2 p.m. The Chargers would have to lose twice to be eliminated.
