Maranatha won its first Southern Section baseball championship with a 6-2 victory over Santa Ana Calvary Chapel in the Division V title game at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Maranatha, under Coach Alan Karg, scored five runs in the first inning with the aid of five walks, a hit batter and a two-run single by Brian Hegarty.

Jon Crabb gave up only two hits for Maranatha, which finished 21-4.

San Marino’s hopes for a Southern Section title ended with a 4-3 defeat to Yucaipa in the Division IV title game at Cal State Fullerton.

Yucaipa overcame a 3-2 deficit by scoring twice in the fifth inning on a triple by senior Brian Banner.

San Marino finished 22-2-1.

St. Lucy’s won the school’s first Southern Section softball championship with a 3-0 victory over Redondo Union in the Division III title game at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Kia Zalewski pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven and walking one, to lead St. Lucy’s, which finished 21-8.

Bishop Amat (22-5) finished second in Division II after losing to Fullerton, 4-1, in 10 innings in the championship game.

The Muir boys’ track team scored 36 points to win the school’s eighth state track title.

Senior Kenny Haslip won the 300 intermediate hurdles and ran a leg for the winning 1,600 relay to lead the Mustangs, which finished 16 points ahead of Redlands and San Diego in the meet at Cerritos College.

Muir’s Heather Sumpter won the girls’ 100 meters with a time of 11.69 seconds.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

LaTaya Woods and Kevin Schramm have been selected Citrus College female and male athletes of the year.

Woods, a freshman who attended Blair High in Pasadena, was the Foothill Conference player of the year in women’s basketball and conference track champion in the 200 and 400 meters.

Schramm, a sophomore from Arcadia, batted .467 for the Owl baseball team and was an all-state selection. Schramm will attend the University of San Diego in the fall.

Nine Pasadena City College students were awarded $1,000 grants through the school’s physical education department’s scholarship program.

The nine scholarship winners are: Chris Zboril, who was all-conference in basketball and softball; Zoli Sule (men’s swimming); Andrew Aron (golf); Aimee Peinado (women’s volleyball); Carol Schreiner (softball); Gisselle Uehling (women’s basketball); LeAndrena Jackson (cheerleading), Diedre Gilmore (athletic trainer) and Karen Lieu (fencing).

COLLEGES

DeVon Edwards of Cal Poly Pomona, who won the 400 meters at the NCAA Division II track and field championships, has been named athlete of the year by the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Edwards, a junior, won the 400 with a time of 45.67 seconds.

Tennis players Rebecca Huereque and Jauffrey Faustini were named Cal Poly student-athletes of the year.

Huereque, who led Pomona to the 1992 Division II championship, finished with a record of 32-6 this past season.

Faustini led the Pomona men’s team to its first appearance in the Division II championships last season. He finished with a record of 34-1.

Azusa Pacific University was named winner of the men’s division of the 1993-1994 all-sports contest by the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The award is based on the overall performance of the athletic program. Azusa Pacific earned the honor because of its national championship in track and field, its seventh-place finish in cross-country and the advancement of the men’s basketball team to the Sweet 16 of the national tournament.

Azusa Pacific is the first California school to win the award.

Azusa Pacific’s Tage Peterson, 19, is favored to win the decathlon at next week’s U.S. junior track and field championships at Tallahassee, Fla.

Peterson has the top junior mark in the nation at 7,267 points. He finished third in the recent NAIA championships.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Kia Zalewski, St. Lucy’s, and Jon Crabb, Maranatha--Zalewski pitched a two-hitter, struck out seven and walked one as St. Lucy’s won the school’s first Southern Section softball championship with a 3-0 victory over Redondo Union in the Division III title game.

Crabb pitched a two-hitter as Maranatha defeated Santa Ana Calvary Chapel, 6-2, to win the Division V championship. Crabb finished the season 10-0 and had a 0.71 earned-run average.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Jeremy Giambi, Cal State Fullerton--Giambi, an outfielder for the Titans who graduated from South Hills High, went two for four and drove in two runs as Fullerton defeated defending national champion Louisiana State, 20-6, in a College World Series elimination game on Sunday.

Giambi hit his first home run of the season against LSU, a solo shot in the fourth.

MISCELLANY

* Registration is open for a summer sports camp sponsored by the city of West Covina that will take place at the Community Youth Center. The camp is open to youths ages 5 to 12 and will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning June 20. Activities include a variety of sports, games and arts and crafts. * A wrestling program for youths ages 10 to 18 is under way at Rowland Heights Park in Rowland Heights. Club and tournament participation will also be offered. Sign-ups are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Information: (818) 912-6774.

* The 10th annual Ricky Bell Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Classic is scheduled for Friday at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the foundation that provides scholarships to economically disadvantaged students.

* The city of Claremont has begun registration for adult slo-pitch softball leagues that will begin play June 27. Men’s leagues are being formed for play Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. Co-ed leagues are being formed for Monday, Thursday and Friday nights.
