Jeff Byrd, who set the Orange County single-season rushing record in 1992 while at Rancho Alamitos High, has transferred from Columbia to Stanford. Byrd, who twice won the Orange County rushing title, will walk on this season at Stanford, where he will be a sophomore. Because Columbia does not offer athletic scholarships, Byrd will not have to sit out a year to become eligible under NCAA rules.

Byrd, who has added 15 pounds to his high school playing weight of 155, will rejoin former Rancho Alamitos teammate Leon Vickers, who was a part-time starter at linebacker for the Cardinal last season.

“He could come out of the backfield on passing downs,” Rancho Alamitos Coach Doug Case said. “He could do a lot for them.”
