NOTEBOOK / KIRBY LEE : Valley Christian High Pitcher, Coach Are Honored by Southern Section

Sophomore pitcher Susie Schoales and Coach Eleanor Dykstra of Valley Christian have been selected Southern Section Division V Player and Coach of the Year.

Schoales (17-2) gave up only one earned run in her last 94 innings, including a stretch of 89 scoreless innings, and had 10 shut outs in her last 11 games to lead the Crusaders to the Division V title.

Kelly Hibma and Cindy Dykstra, the daughter of the coach, were also selected to the first team for Valley Christian (24-3-1), which ended the season with a 25-game unbeaten streak.

Cristy Waring and Kim Gutridge of La Mirada, Shelby Maxwell and Carrie Davis of Bellflower, Carie Shoumaker of Lakewood and Brianna Buffington of Mayfair were named to the Division II first team.

Jackie Deboard of La Serna and Marisa Davis of California were Division III picks.

Pitchers Luke Fitzpatrick of Lakewood and Pete Loza of Bell Gardens have been selected to the Southern Section Division I baseball first team.

Gahr’s Chuck Lopez and George Castillo were named to the Division II first team. La Mirada’s Jeff Hallock and Mayfair’s Dan Harkey were chosen to the Division III team.

Whittier Christian placed three players on the Division VI team: Tim Wiley, Chris Keife and Jason Hyde. Jeremy DeBie and Mark Overduin of Valley Christian, along with Evan Taylor of Calvary Chapel, were other selections.
