First Baseman Chris Fick, who led Cal Lutheran in most offensive categories, has signed a free-agent contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and will report today to San Bernardino, an independent team in the Class-A California League.

Fick, 24, a graduate of Newbury Park High, was signed by his brother, Cardinal scout Chuck Fick. Chris Fick, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound, left-handed batter, hit .367 with 14 home runs and 52 runs batted in for the Kingsmen in the spring.

Geoff Zahn, a former major league pitcher, has been named an assistant at Pepperdine.

Zahn, who was an assistant at The Master’s College in 1987 and 1988, will coach the pitchers under the Waves’ new coach, Pat Harrison. Zahn was also athletic director at The Master’s, where he hired Harrison to be the Mustangs’ head coach in 1988.

Zahn pitched in the majors from 1973-85, playing with the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins and Angels. He had a career record of 111-109 and a 3.74 ERA.

Football

Troy Jackson, head coach at Bethel Christian High for the past three years, is expected to be hired as an assistant coach at Antelope Valley College, pending board approval later this month.

Jackson, who had an 11-19 record at Bethel Christian, guided the Eagles to the 1993 Desert Mountain League title. They advanced to the second round of the Southern Section Division XI playoffs.

A 1982 graduate of Canyon High, Jackson will coach the linebackers.

Rugby

The Eagle Rock Sevens Rugby tournament will begin at 9 a.m. July 16 at the John Ferraro Athletic Fields in Griffith Park. The tournament, which includes rugby clubs from across Southern California, runs all day and admission is free.

Motor Sports

A preview of the M-Car Grand Prix, an amateur race of miniature cars, will be held at Saugus Speedway on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The race is a fund-raiser for the Santa Clarita Child and Family Development Center, which is looking for potential sponsors to race in the event in October.

Soccer

U.S. World Cup team members Alexi Lalas and Cobi Jones will be the featured instructors for an inaugural youth soccer camp near Griffith Park, July 25-29.
