Heidi Oversier has resigned as Santa Monica High School’s girls’ basketball coach to become coach at Chadwick.

The Vikings showed promise during Oversier’s first season and Jaime Goodrich, who was selected to The Times’ 1994 Westside girls’ basketball second team, will return. Goodrich is the daughter of former UCLA and Laker standout Gail Goodrich.

Santa Monica was 8-13 last season and finished in a tie for third in the Bay League with a 3-4 record.

Oversier will continue to coach the Vikings this summer until her replacement is named. Santa Monica is currently playing host to an eight-team girls’ summer league that runs through Aug. 1.

Compton Dominguez, Long Beach Poly and Westchester will be among the teams competing in the Fairfax Summer Classic, which begins today.

Among the top players competing are Tommy Prince of Dominguez, Danny Walker and Ben Sanders of Westchester, Darwin Carter of Manual Arts, Damian Dawson of Poly and Duane Davis of Fairfax.

Defending champion St. John Bosco is also in the field.

There will be eight games daily. The tournament ends Sunday.

The Slam-N-Jam National Invitational basketball tournament begins Saturday and continues through July 21 at South Torrance and West Torrance high schools. The tournament features some of the top players in the country.

Competing for the Values for Better America team will be Sanders and Walker of Westchester, Schea Cotton and Clay McKnight of Mater Dei, and Olujima Mann of Santa Ana Valley.

Former Santa Monica High football standout Michael Jackson will represent the Westside in the North-South Shrine Game on July 23 at Cerritos College.

Jackson, who will attend Washington State in the fall, caught 30 passes for 563 yards and four touchdowns and rushed 25 times for 461 yards and four touchdowns as a senior.

Some of the state’s top high school quarterbacks and receivers will compete at the Air 7 Quarterback Challenge on Saturday at Wilson High.

Competition includes a distance toss, read and react, speed and agility drills.

Among the local participants are Christopher Malcolm (Brentwood), Brandon Pernell (St. Bernard), Steven Pulley (St. Monica), Danny Ragsdale (Murphy) and Scott Walter (Loyola).

The contest, which begins at 6 p.m., is organized by Steve Clarkson, former Palisades High assistant football coach.

Santa Monica College is looking for a part-time coach for the men’s and women’s swimming teams.

Last season, Stu Blumkin coached the men’s team and Kiff Kimber coached the women’s program, but because of budget cuts the school has decided to combine the teams under one coach.

Blumkin and Kimber are candidates for the job. Other interested candidates should contact Athletic Director Avie Bridges at (310) 452-9213.

Tommie Smith, a member of the 1968 U.S. Olympic team, will coach the Santa Monica College men’s cross-country and track teams in addition to his current duties as the women’s cross-country and track coach.

The Westchester American Legion baseball team is scheduled to play El Segundo at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Recreation Park in El Segundo.
