Turner Shoots an 81, Falls 10 Shots Behind

Mike Turner of Sherman Oaks shot an 81 Thursday in the third round of the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif., and fell 10 shots off the lead with one round to play.

Turner, one of the last players to tee off, was caught in the late-afternoon heat and wind and was eight over for the first eight holes. He has a 54-hole total of 223 after starting the round only two shots off the lead.

Kevin Claborn of Brea and Mark Johnson of Helendale are the co-leaders at 213. Turner, a four-time Southern California Public Links champion, is in a two-way tie for 27th place.

Darren Angel of Northridge shot his second consecutive one-over 71 and is tied for 14th place after three rounds of the American Junior Golf Assn. Boys’ Junior Championship at the Four Seasons Resort Tournament Players Course in Irving, Tex.

Angel has a 54-hole total of even-par 210 and trails leader Robert Floyd of Miami Beach by nine shots. Ben Cherney of Encino shot 80 and dropped into a two-way tie for 58th at 227.

Karen Mabli of Palos Verdes and Millie Stanley of Los Angeles advanced to the match-play final in the championship flight of the 93rd Annual Southern Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.

Mabli defeated Kellii Rinker of La Quinta, 4 and 2. Stanley advanced when her opponent, Linda Chen of Palm Springs, withdrew. The tournament is sponsored by the Women’s Southern California Golf Assn.

Football

Jones Intercable will telecast selected high school, college and semi-professional football games in the Antelope Valley on a tape-delay basis this season for the 10th consecutive year. All games will air on Jones Intercable Channel 3 in the Antelope Valley.

Baseball

Registration and tryouts for the West Valley Little League fall season are Aug. 6-7 and Aug. 13-14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 17301 Oxnard Street in Encino in the Franklin Fields Complex.

The season runs Sept. 10 to Nov. 19. Boys and girls ages 5-15 are eligible.

There is also a Challenger Division for children with physical and mental disabilities.

Tennis

The Pierce College men’s team is No. 2 behind Foothill College of Los Altos in the final 1994 California junior college rankings. Pierce lost to Foothill in the state championship match in May.

Doug Young of Pierce is ranked No. 12 among singles players, Jenia Karimov 14th and Philip Leonhardt 17th. In doubles, Karimov and Young are No. 5, and Leonhardt and Kasper Nielson are No. 8.

Basketball

The ProTech Basketball Camp is scheduled for Aug. 22-26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Burbank High.

Gerald Madkins of the Cleveland Cavaliers, a former UCLA guard, will be the guest speaker. The camp is for players ages 11-17.
