A Cal State Fullerton search committee has selected six finalists for the vacant athletic director position, and a successor to Bill Shumard is expected to be named this month.

The finalists include two associate athletic directors at California State universities, John Easterbrook of Fresno State and Reginald Blaylock of San Diego State. The group also includes two women, Judith Davidson, athletic director at Central Connecticut State, and Joanne Fortunato, a former athletic director at Keene State College in New Hampshire who is now working as a management consultant.

The other finalists are Jack Mehl, business and marketing manager of the Rose Bowl, and William Lide, athletic director at West Chester State in Pennsylvania. Mehl was athletic director at Florida Atlantic from 1979 through 1991.

“I would anticipate that the final selection will come from this group,” said Alan Saltzstein, a political science professor who is chairman of the search committee. After interviews with each candidate, the committee’s final recommendation will be given to school President Milton A. Gordon. The interviews tentatively are scheduled for Aug. 17-19.

“The finalists will meet with various campus groups and individuals, including the president, during the time they’re being interviewed by our group,” Saltzstein said. “We’re very pleased with the group of candidates for the position.”

Saltzstein said he expects a decision in time for the new athletic director to start work in early September.
