Borders Will Have a Presence in County’s Hall of Fame

Southern California College pitcher Ila Borders will have her jersey and the first ball she pitched in a college game inducted into the Orange County Hall of Fame. The ceremonies are Sept. 13 at Anaheim Stadium during the Orange County Sports Assn.’s “Newsmakers Luncheon.”

Borders finished the season with a 2-4 record and a 2.91 earned-run average in 49 1/3 innings. She walked 17 and struck out six in seven starts.

The Placentia Mustangs 14-and-under team lost to Carolina, Puerto Rico, 2-1, in the first round of the Sandy Koufax World Series in Houston. The Mustangs will play Decatur, Ga., today in the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Placentia’s Jake Pickle gave up three hits in the loss. Tyler Sporrer went two for two and Brett Kay had a run-scoring single.

Eric Stevens, an outfielder from Cypress College and Pacifica High, signed with San Jose State, a Cypress College spokesman said. Stevens hit .274 with three home runs and 36 RBIs, scored 47 runs, and led the team in walks. Cypress won the State championship.

Ted Wilkes, an outfielder from Saddleback College, has signed to play at Nevada Las Vegas. Wilkes, from Laguna Hills High, hit .303 with nine doubles and nine home runs. He also led the team in RBIs with 44.
