How bad are the Rams?

“If you looked at us (against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday), you’d say we’re not very good, to be honest with you,” Coach Chuck Knox said. “Obviously we’re not playing up to the level that I had anticipated, that’s for sure. . . . But I think we’ve got a chance to get better if we can eliminate shooting ourselves in the foot.

“We just have to keep pressing on these players that they have to do the little things. We had 10 penalties.”

A week ago, Knox hired a veteran NFL official to work at team practices in an effort to identify and eliminate such mistakes. He will do the same again this week.

“We’re going to do everything that we possibly can to get these things corrected, or change the people that are doing them,” Knox said.

Cornerback Darryl Henley, while saying he plans to be at Rams Park on Sunday for practice, is worried the team will release him because of his present bail restrictions.

“I believe I’m playing,” said Henley, who has been indicted on charges of cocaine possession and distribution. “But again the system has put it back on the Rams, and I must say I’d be kind of irritated too. If I was John Shaw or Georgia Frontiere, when do you say ‘Enough?’ I don’t think it’s anything directly related to me, I think it’s the pressure.”

Ram officials met Friday night to discuss Henley’s fate.

If the Rams decide to keep Henley on their roster, they will have to agree to pay his $1-million bond in the event he flees. In addition, they will have to agree to let a probation officer fly on the team plane and remain in contact at all times on their trips.

Linebacker Ernest Jones, the team’s third-round pick, was expected to have an MRI on his left knee, injured against the Chargers. If the injury is serious enough for him to be put on injured reserve, Jones will be unable to play or practice this season.
