Shepherd’s Scores Help Arcadia Top Saddleback, 21-7

Jon Shepherd rushed for 166 yards and two second-half touchdowns as Arcadia defeated Saddleback, 21-7, Thursday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

On the third play of the third quarter, Shepherd broke through the middle of the Saddleback defense for a 66-yard touchdown run, giving Arcadia a 14-7 lead.

Arcadia’s larger linemen wore down Saddleback in the second half, as the Apaches outgained the Roadrunners, 157-49 yards. Shepherd had 109 yards rushing in the second half.

He capped the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Saddleback (0-1) had a chance to get back in the game midway through the third quarter, when Morrow Potts sacked Arcadia quarterback Matt Shepherd, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Roadrunners’ Rafael Lucero, who returned it to the Arcadia 44-yard line.

But on the next play, Saddleback’s Brian Killingbeck threw an interception that Frank Liu returned 39 yards to the Saddleback 42.

Saddleback’s lone touchdown came in the first quarter, when Killingbeck threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Hector Hernandez.

Killingbeck completed three of 10 passes for 38 yards.
