Top-ranked Stanford defeated UC Irvine, 9-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo game Thursday at Corona del Mar High.

“I was very pleased with our effort,” Anteater Coach Ted Newland said. “It was close all the way and the score does not reflect how we played. We are a very young team. I’m not disappointed at all.”

UC Irvine (0-1, 0-1), ranked fifth in national coaches’ poll, took a 2-0 lead, but Stanford came back with three goals to lead, 3-2, at the half.
