PREP ROUNDUP : San Clemente Is Perfect in Doubles

San Clemente lost all nine singles sets but won all nine doubles sets to earn a tie and beat El Modena by a game in a nonleague tennis match Friday at San Clemente.

Shelly Hayden and Julie Manning defeated El Modena’s No. 1 doubles team, 6-1, in the last set to give San Clemente the 62-61 advantage in games. San Clemente is 2-0.

In other nonleague girls’ tennis:

Laguna Beach 16, Capistrano Valley 2--Michelle Bray swept at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and Lindsay Weiss swept No. 2, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead visiting Laguna Beach (1-0).

Cypress 10, Troy 8--Francoise Castro swept all three matches, including Troy’s top single’s player Dana Kim, 6-4, which clinched the victory for the Centurions.

Dana Hills 11, University 7--Lara Spica swept at singles, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1, for fourth-ranked Dana Hills (1-0), which was playing without three players being disciplined for breaking team rules. Visiting University is 0-1.

Huntington Beach 10, Long Beach Wilson 8--Allison Arvizu swept at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Huntington Beach (1-0).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Long Beach Poly 3, Los Alamitos 0--Amanda Johnson had 10 kills for visiting Los Alamitos, which lost, 15-2, 15-2, 16-14.

In the Valencia water polo tournament:

Laguna Beach 9, El Toro B 1--Christiansen Jensen, the 6-foot-3 senior, scored three goals against El Toro and five goals in a first-round game against Canyon, which the Artist won 14-3, also Friday.

In nonleague water polo:

Esperanza 21, Sunny Hills 6--Mike Stanley and John Zinn had four goals each for visiting Esperanza in the season opener for both teams.

Santa Ana 19, Loara 17--Edgar Perez had nine goals and Luis Perez had seven goals to lead Santa Ana (1-0). Micheal Timanus had eight goals for Loara (0-1).

Tustin 16, Long Beach Millikan 2--David Foley and Marshall Bauernfiend each scored four goals for visiting Tustin.
