PREP ROUNDUP : Cornue, Pharris Lead Villa Park to Water Polo Victories

Led by Peter Cornue and Brian Pharris, eighth-ranked Villa Park won two games in the Long Beach Millikan water polo tournament Thursday.

Cornue and Pharris each had three goals against Los Angeles Loyola in an 11-6, first-round victory, and three in a 12-1, second-round victory over St. John Bosco.

In other Long Beach Millikan tournament games:

Capistrano Valley 13, Canyon 11--Charles Wierdsma scored six goals for Capistrano Valley in the second round. Jake French, who had four goals in a 14-2 victory over Santa Monica in first round, had three against Canyon.

Santa Barbara 15, Estancia 10--Estancia had a strong fourth quarter, outscoring Santa Barbara, 5-2, but the Dons, ranked No. 1 in Division IV, won the first-round game.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Cypress 9, Cerritos 9 (Cypress wins on games, 74-69)--Shawna McKee and Ashley Lister swept their doubles sets, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2, for Cypress.

Estancia 9, Huntington Beach 9 (Estancia wins on games, 77-71)--Kathleen Kanjer and Amy Fortner swept their sets in doubles, 7-5, 6-1, 6-0, for Estancia (3-1).

Newport Harbor 12, Los Alamitos 6--Senior Lindsay Olson swept her sets at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0, for the second-ranked Sailors.

Orange 9, Connelly 9 (Orange wins on games, 89-81)--Jenny Von Behren swept in singles, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0, for Orange (3-0). Ali Cook lost to Von Behren, 6-4, but won her other two sets, 6-3, 6-3, for Connelly (0-3).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Marina 3, Mater Dei 1--Marcy Crouch had 28 kills as Marina (2-1) upset the fourth-ranked Monarchs, 15-10, 7-15, 15-11, 15-6, at Mater Dei.
