Orange County High School Football PREP EXTRA : McMahon’s Three Touchdown Passes Spark Villa Park

Villa Park snapped out of its offensive funk and sent Brea-Olinda into one Friday night.

The Spartans scored 14 first-quarter points and held Brea to two first downs in the first half on their way to a 28-7 nonleague victory at Brea-Olinda High School.

Villa Park (1-0-1), which struggled in a 0-0 tie against Valencia last week, utilized the Sean McMahon-to-Sean Adams connection to build its early lead. On the Spartans’ second possession, McMahon hit Adams three times for 47 yards, including a 32-yard completion on third and 16 from the Spartan 31. The two combined for a four-yard touchdown pass to finish the drive.

The Spartans recovered a fumble by Brea’s Ryan Jones on the ensuing kickoff. Seven plays later, McMahon rolled out and hit running back Tony D’Amato with a seven-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead.

“Last week we failed a couple of times on scoring opportunities, but this week we made it count,” said McMahon, who completed 14 of 17 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns. “I think we executed better. We wanted to establish certain things from the very start.”

Adams caught seven passes for 106 yards.

Villa Park scored again on its first possession of the second half. On its first play, McMahon hit Kris Fisher with a 32-yard completion to the Brea 49. Five plays later, Franklin Haynes broke a couple of tackles and scored on a 25-yard run. McMahon passed to Matt Welch for a two-point conversion and a 22-0 lead.

Haynes led the Spartans with 80 yards in 11 carries.

Brea scored its only touchdown late in the third quarter, on Jerome Owens’ six-yard touchdown run. Owens led the Wildcats with 81 yards in 18 carries.

The Spartans capped the scoring on a McMahon-to-Rob Hartzell 14-yard pass with 8 minutes 33 seconds left in the game.
