Share

Costa Mesa piled up 495 yards on the ground and controlled the ball for more than 31 minutes, scoring on four of their first five possessions in beating Westminster, 38-14 Friday.

Charles Chatman led the Mustang attack with 226 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns. Dewayne Crenshaw added 117 yards, all in the first half for the Mustangs (2-0). Crenshaw, who is recovering from a fractured wrist, piled up 248 yards in last week’s 50-6 victory over Ocean View.

Chatman scored on runs of 7, 49, and 22 yards on the first three Mustang possessions of the game to build a 22-0 lead. Westminster nearly got back a touchdown before the intermission, but Todd Mann dropped a Jerry Allison pass at the goal line and the Lions eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Costa Mesa added another score early in the third quarter, as Chatman runs of 24 and 30 led to Brian Reeves’ 7-yard scoring dash.

Westminster did not go quietly. Leonard Ibarra returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards to get the Lions on the board, and a 74-yard Allison-to-David Kurien pass set up an 18-yard touchdown run from Allison.

After the teams exchanged fumbles, Costa Mesa added another touchdown, this one on a 27-yard pass from Ryan Taylor to Josh Amezola, to take a 38-14 lead and put the contest out of reach.
