Laguna Beach won its first game of the season, beating determined El Segundo, 7-0, in front more than 850 Friday night at Laguna Beach High School.

The Artists scored on a three-play drive in the waning moments of the first half. Quarterback Nate Tivaroff completed a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Zeda Stone, who streaked into the end zone.

The Artists’ defense recovered three costly fumbles, two in third quarter. Laguna Beach failed to score afterward, but kept the ball from quarterback Jack Hawley’s Eagle offense.

The Eagle receivers dropped many sure catches.

A dropped pass occurred in the end zone in the fourth quarter, when an Eagle score would have given them the opportunity to tie the score.

The Artists’ defense was tested in the latter moments of the fourth quarter, when Hawley completed three passes of 25, 18 and 14 yards. With seconds ticking away, and no timeouts left, Hawley scrambled but was stopped at the Artists’ four-yard line. An incomplete pass ended the threat.
