ROUNDUP : Extra Effort Gives Master’s a 5-2 Victory

Gustavo Durruty scored twice in overtime, leading The Master’s College to a 5-2 men’s soccer victory over Point Loma Nazarene on Thursday at San Diego.

After the Crusaders scored twice to tie the game, the Mustangs pulled away with three goals in overtime. Point Loma Nazarene played a man short for all but the first 16 minutes.

Bryan Lee, a freshman from Oklahoma City, scored a goal and had two assists for The Master’s (8-1-1), which is 20th in the latest NAIA rankings.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY

Hart 17, Burbank 42; Hart 18, Canyon 41; Hart 18, Saugus 43; Hart 15, Burroughs 49--Undefeated Brett Strahan of Hart did not run in order to rest a tender ankle and conserve energy for Saturday’s Stanford Invitational, but junior John Duarte finished first and senior Joel Givens ran second to propel the Indians to victory in the first of three Foothill League meets to be held this season.

Duarte timed 17 minutes 22 seconds over the three-mile course at College of the Canyons, with Givens finishing at 17:23.

Hart 28, Canyon 29; Hart 22, Saugus 33; Hart 15, Burbank 48; Hart 15, Burroughs 49--Canyon had three runners among the top five finishers but Hart’s depth powered the Indians to victory in the first of three Foothill League girls’ meets.

Canyon junior Kellie Stigile finished second with a time of 20:50 over the three-mile course at Canyons. Sophomore Julie Harris (21:10) was fourth and junior Danielle Hadfield (21:18) finished fifth for Canyon.

Sophomore Breanne Schweitzer of Saugus won the race in 20:12.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Channel Islands d. Camarillo, 15-12, 18-16, 14-16, 15-8--The Raiders won their first Marmonte League match in at least five years, said co-Coach Dave Chavez. Maria Gonzalez led the way with seven aces, seven kills and 20 digs.

Royal d. Simi Valley, 5-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-2--Michelle Lampkin had 11 kills to lead the Highlanders (4-2, 3-1) in the Marmonte League match.

Louisville d. Calabasas, 10-15, 6-15, 15-12, 15-8, 15-3--Audra Duda had 14 kills and Melinda Palumbo had 40 assists for the Royals (2-3) in the nonleague match.

Duda added seven digs and four aces.

L.A. Baptist d. Paraclete, 15-12, 15-6, 15-4--Darcie Frazier had 16 kills and Tunde Hrotko had 24 assists for the Knights (7-0). Paraclete dropped to 3-3.

Burroughs d. Burbank, 15-6, 17-15, 15-1--Suzy Babko had 14 kills and four aces for Burroughs (6-1, 1-0) in the Foothill League match.

Birmingham d. Kennedy, 15-12, 15-3, 15-2--Marciela Valdez had 16 kills and Dinora Marroquin had 22 assists, leading the Braves (4-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Birmingham.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Royal 16, San Luis Obispo 9--Bill Bruininga scored six goals to lead the Highlanders (6-6) in a pool play game in the San Luis Obispo tournament. Royal will play San Marcos today.
