There’s no place like home.

For proof, see the Alhambra High football team, which is off to a 4-0 start. The Moors, under Coach Gil Ruedaflores, have defeated Glendale, Pioneer, Pasadena and La Canada.

The victories over Pioneer and Pasadena came at refurbished Moor Field, which is the site of the Alhambra home games for the first time in 10 years. The Moors had played their home games at East Los Angeles College during that span.

Alhambra figures to reap the benefits of home crowds the next two weeks when the Moors play host to Cantwell-Sacred Heart and San Gabriel in an Almont League opener.

The revolving door at Muir High took another turn this week when Jack Allen, who was in his second season as football coach, resigned at the request of school administrators.

Allen, who guided the Mustangs to an 8-3 record last season and a 2-2 start this season, has been replaced by Mike Harrison, a teacher at the school who is a former assistant at Muir.

Harrison, Muir’s eighth coach since 1987, has been hired on an interim basis and will coach only for the remainder of the season.

Cross-country teams in the San Gabriel Valley will no longer have to pay bus entry fees at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas.

The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the emergency motion by Supervisor Mike Antonovich. The County Department of Parks and Recreation had instituted a $20 bus entry fee this year to increase revenues after reduction of county funding.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Citrus College football team gave Coach Dean Karnoski his first victory last week with a 26-12 Foothill Conference win over Chaffey.

The Owls, who have a bye this week, are 1-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.

Citrus quarterback Gabe Agredano completed 20 of 25 passes for 240 yards, including touchdown pass plays of two and 23 yards to tight end Greg Pollard against Chaffey.

J.J. Johnson had six receptions for 84 yards.

Saturday night’s Mission Conference game between Mt. San Antonio College (2-0-1) and Pasadena (1-1-1) at Mt. SAC figures to be an offensive showcase, featuring the passing of Mt. SAC quarterback Cody Lee Smith and the all-purpose exploits of PCC’s Saladin McCullough.

Smith completed 27 of 47 passes for a school-record 558 yards and four touchdowns in Mt. SAC’s 46-24 victory over Orange Coast College. Smith broke the record of 492 yards set by Mike Hohensee against San Diego Mesa in 1980.

Smith also rushed for 40 yards. His 598 yards of total offense eclipsed the record of 539 set by Anthony Calvillo in 1991 against Riverside.

PCC is coming off a 42-41 loss to Fullerton, during which McCullough rushed for 82 yards, caught seven passes for 93 yards and scored four touchdowns, including one on a 98-yard kickoff return.

Lancer quarterback Joe Phears completed 16 of 34 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

The Citrus women’s cross-country team will compete in the UC Irvine Invitational on Friday, hoping to continue the momentum generated during a victory at the Bakersfield Invitational last week.

Laura Bermudez of Citrus won the women’s race in 19 minutes, 3 seconds to pace the Owls. Mt. SAC finished second and Long Beach third.

COLLEGES

La Verne’s football team is ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III West region poll heading into Saturday’s Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Darren MacLellan gained 222 yards and scored two touchdowns and Anthony Rice caught five passes for 102 yards and three touchdowns in La Verne’s 54-13 SCIAC victory over Pomona-Pitzer.

Ryan Campuzano completed 10 of 14 passes for 161 yards for La Verne (3-0).

Jack Ramirez completed 13 of 25 passes for 127 yards for Pomona-Pitzer (1-3), which plays a SCIAC game at Occidental Saturday afternoon. Brad Heinz hauled in an eight-yard touchdown pass and Robert Hicks scored on a one-yard run for the Sagehens.

Claremont (0-3) plays host to Whittier in a SCIAC game Saturday afternoon. The Stags lost a nonconference game against Trinity (Tex.), 42-14, last week.

Azusa Pacific (1-3) will attempt to win its second consecutive game Saturday when the Cougars play host to Chapman.

Azusa Pacific defeated Whittier, 24-17, to end a three-game losing streak. Sophomore tailback Marcus Slaten gained 203 yards in 37 carries for the Cougars.

Tennis players Mike Burgess and Phong Nguyen of Cal Poly Pomona advanced to the Rolex Small College National Intercollegiate Championships with their doubles victory in the west regional last weekend.

Burgess and Nguyen defeated Jon Sueda and Andrew Csordas of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, in the finals.

The national championships will be held Oct. 27 in Edmund, Okla.

PREP ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Oscar Interiano, Sierra Vista--Interiano, a senior running back, gained 209 yards in 26 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Dons to a 20-3 victory over Glenn.

Interiano scored on runs of 16, four and one yards in Sierra Vista’s first victory.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Kerri Keating, Cal Poly Pomona--Keating, a junior from Walnut, scored both goals as the Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer team upset third-ranked Metro State, 2-0.

Keating, a midfielder, has a team high three goals for the Broncos (2-8-1), who play host to San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
