FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Cortes, South Gate Dominate Roosevelt

Senior running back Hoffman Cortes rambled for 182 yards on 21 carries to lead South Gate past Roosevelt, 22 to 6, in a Southeastern Conference showdown at Roosevelt.

Cortes had a 50-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach for Roosevelt. South Gate also got help from senior quarterback Juan Vasquez, who completed 5 of 11 pases for 66 yards and a touchdown. Vasquez also scored on a one-yard sneak in the second quarter.

Rams senior receiver Eddie Montes caught three passes for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Roosevelt running back John Pineda had 73 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore quarterback Fernando Delgadillo came off the bench to complete 4 of 13 passes for 92 yards in the second half for Roosevelt.

Los Angeles 8, Hamilton 0-- The Romans defeated Hamilton in a Coastal Conference game at Los Angeles that was marred by 28 penalties, four fumbles and four interceptions.

Neither team mounted a consistent attack, although Hamilton’s Antoine Blount rushed for 101 yards in a losing effort.

Roman standouts were Akeem Onaolopo, who rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown, and Wesley Watson, who caught two passes for 25 yards and made a 35-yard run at the end of the game to seal the victory.

Franklin 20, Eagle Rock 19--Franklin thwarted a dramatic comeback by Eagle Rock, stopping a pass attempt for a two-point conversion after Eagle Rock’s second fourth-quarter touchdown in a Northern Conference game.

Franklin scored three touchdowns, all on six-yard passes from quarterback Jeff Deno, who completed 12 of 25 passes for 115 yards.

Franklin’s Johnnie Sanders, the area’s leading receiver, was suspended from the team for disciplinary reasons.

Lincoln 22, Marshall 0--Lincoln quarterback Adrian Pulido rushed for a 26-yard touchdown and threw a 22-yard scoring pass as the Tigers beat the Barristers in a Northern Conference game at Lincoln.

Lincoln racked up 152 rushing yards while allowing 50 yards to Marshall. Lincoln running back Jose Guevara ran for 69 yards on 22 carries and seven tackles on defense.

University 21, Manual Arts 18--A potent performance by Manual Arts quarterback Willie Laffitte wasn’t enough to overcome Erick Barnes, who beat the Toilers on offense and defense in a Coastal Conference game.

Laffitte completed eight of 16 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns, but Barnes’ second-quarter interception set up his own five-yard touchdown reception. Barnes caught a second touchdown pass of 20 yards, then sealed the victory with another interception with 54 seconds left in the game, stealing the ball from a Toiler receiver in the University end zone.

Belmont 21, Hollywood 8--Belmont quarterback George Hernandez was 13 of 31 for 145 yards and had five carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Belmont’s Febian Villa had seven receptions for 60 yards.

Bell 26, Lynwood 17--Vern Benard rushed for 158 yards and Gustavo Valenzuela threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Eagles to a nonleague win over Lynwood at Bell.

Lynwood jumped ahead 7-0 on a 45-yard run by Mac Barnes, thanks to a fumble recovery by linebacker Winston Offer. Late in the second quarter Valenzuela capped a nine-play 57-yard drive with a quarterback sneak to tie the game.

Locke 34, Huntington Park 6--Sirr Parker rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns and Freddie Lee had 116 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown, as the Saints won a Southeastern Conference game at Huntington Park.

Parker had runs of 71 yards and 55 yards negated by holding penalties.

Huntington Park scored first on Ivan Ramos’ five-yard run.

Bell Gardens 20, El Rancho 7--The play of Bell Gardens’ special teams was the difference in the nonleague game at El Rancho.

A fumble recovery by Luis Martinez on the second-half kickoff set up a 22-yard touchdown pass from Eddie Negrete to Guillermo Alvarez to break a 7-7 tie.

Bell Gardens sealed the victory after Diego Aluizo scooped up a blocked punt by Rolondo Terrazas and ran 16 yards for a 20-7 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Records: Bell Gardens 2-3; El Rancho 1-4.

Wilson 42, Verdugo Hills 0--Haunted by the fact that it had scored in only two of its last 12 quarters, Verdugo Hills High also faced the specter of Arlin Slayton on Friday afternoon.

Wilson’s junior tailback rushed for 244 yards in 17 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Mules to a Northern Conference win at Verdugo Hills.

Records: Wilson 4-1; Verdugo Hills 0-3-2.

Banning 13, Washington 0--Ricardo Diaz scored two touchdowns for Banning while Washington failed twice to score inside the 20-yard line in a Southern Pacific Conference game at Washington.

During their first offensive series, the Generals went 50 yards to the Pilot 34, but the drive ended when quarterback Nathaniel Tubbs was sacked on fourth down.

Trailing 13-0, Washington got the ball at the Banning 24 after the Pilots failed to get off a punt because of bad snap. Dennis Northcutt, who replaced an injured Tubbs at quarterback, ran nine yards to the 11. But Washington could not score during its next four plays.

Washington had 90 yards in total offense.

Garfield 19, Jordan 6--Led by Edgar Soto, Garfield took an early lead and used a rugged defense to win the Northeastern Conference battle of the Bulldogs. Soto rushed for 158 yards in 30 attempts and scored two touchdowns.
