PREP ROUNDUP : El Dorado Rallies in Water Polo

Kendall Benson scored with less than a minute to go to give El Dorado a 6-5 victory over Katella in an Empire League water polo game Wednesday at El Dorado.

After trailing by three in the fourth quarter, Benson brought El Dorado within one with his third goal of the game. Scott Hammond scored the tying goal with 2 minutes 10 seconds left.

Dave Shaddy scored two goals for Katella (13-8, 2-1).

In another Empire League game:

Cypress 21, Century 7--Josh Binford scored five goals for Cypress (10-7, 2-1). Teammate David Watkins added four and Mark Slevcove three. Jorge Grijalba scored four goals for Century (1-6, 0-3).

In the Century League:

Foothill 16, Santa Ana Valley 3--Seniors Scott Nicholson and Dan Hartloff each scored three goals to lead No. 3 Foothill (13-3, 3-0).

Villa Park 18, El Modena 6--Brian Pharris had five goals and Peter Cornue four to lead seventh-ranked Villa Park (15-6, 3-0).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 13, Sunny Hills 7--Gregg Petrisevac and Daniel Vanciu each scored four goals to lead Buena Park (13-11, 3-0). It was only the third league loss since 1970 for Sunny Hills, which at 1-2 is in danger of failing to win the league title after winning it the last 24 seasons.

La Habra 17, Fullerton 5--The Ploog brothers, Dan and Dave, combined for nine goals and six assists. Dan, with seven goals in the game, has 115 goals for the season.

Troy 8, Sonora 4--Justin Link and Scott Baker each scored three goals to lead Troy (18-5, 2-1).

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 15, Ocean View 4--Senior Bret Trezise scored eight goals for Saddleback (13-4, 2-1). Trezise has 106 goals this season. Teammate Juan Colchado added four goals. Ocean View is 3-3, 0-3.

Servite 23, Westminster 5--Sophomore Chris Hamme scored four goals to lead No. 4 Servite (16-6, 3-0). Sophomore teammate Ruben Lopez added two goals for the Friars.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 20, Valencia 4--Tad Murphy scored eight goals and had three assists for Brea-Olinda (18-3, 4-0).

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 16, Woodbridge 2--Gabe Wyatt had four goals and teammate Mike Peetz had three for ninth-ranked Newport Harbor (9-8, 2-1).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 18, Huntington Beach 5--Mike Stanley and Robert Seino each scored four goals for No. 6 Esperanza (13-5, 3-0). Pete Lange had five saves for Esperanza and scored one goal.

In Freeway League boys’ cross-country:

La Habra 22, Sunny Hills 36--Chuck Gatchell finished second, running three miles in 15 minutes 47 seconds, for seventh-ranked La Habra (3-1). Sunny Hills’ Garrett Jensen won in 15:46.

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 26, Servite 33--O.C. Franck finished first for Servite in 15:17 and Santa Ana’s Luis Zaragoza was second in 15:47. Santa Ana is 5-0 in league meets. Servite drops to 1-4.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 25, Aliso Niguel 32--Estancia’s Johann Appell won in 16:22.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 17, Trabuco Hills 43--Adalberto Sanchez (15:11) and Nobhuiro Yamishita (16:25) finished first and second to lead Capistrano Valley (3-1).

Mater Dei 22, San Clemente 33--Brian Mitzel finished first in 16:00 for third-ranked Mater Dei.

In Freeway League girls’ cross-country:

La Habra 21, Sunny Hills 38--Maria and Paula Agras took second and third to lead La Habra (7-0, 4-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Trabuco Hills 17, Capistrano Valley 40--Peggy Hall won in 19:26 for Trabuco Hills (4-0). Capistrano Valley is 2-2.

In Golden West League girls’ volleyball:

Ocean View 3, Westminster 0--Senior Jacqueline Knebel had 13 kills to lead Ocean View in its 15-5, 15-9, 15-9 victory over Westminster. Ocean View remains undefeated at 9-0, 5-0.

Tustin 3, Rosary 2--Michelle Kowaliski and Stacy Peterson each had 13 kills for Tustin (7-4, 4-1), which took sole possession of second place with the 15-9, 15-12, 12-15, 17-19, 15-10 victory. Traci Johnson had 14 kills for Rosary (4-6, 3-2) and teammate Giovanna Franzia added 28 digs and eight kills.
