Go play in traffic? Sort of.

Highland High Coach Lin Parker joked before Friday’s game with Antelope Valley that he took his team and watched cars whiz by on the Antelope Valley Freeway in order to prepare his players for the speedy Antelopes.

After losing a 42-6 laugher played at Quartz Hill High, Parker was still in a quipping mood.

“They’re faster than freeway traffic,” he said with a smile.

Antelope Valley forced five turnovers and offensive players Jermaine Lewis and Trymon Redick stepped on the accelerator to run away from the Bulldogs.

The Antelopes (5-2, 3-0 in league play) are leaving the rest of the Golden League behind.

Since starting 2-2, the Antelopes have won three league games by a combined 110-15.

“Right now, we’re thinking championship,” said running back Lewis, who rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

His 12-yard scoring run was followed by a two-point conversion that gave Antelope Valley a 15-0 lead in the second quarter.

The 5-foot-7 Lewis made it 21-0 at halftime by scoring from four yards late in the second quarter.

It got no better for the Bulldogs (4-4, 1-3) in the second half. Antelope Valley scored on its first two possessions--including a 73-yard run by Chad Murphy. Cory Oggs added a 31-yard fumble return for a score.

Highland could do little right. Its top offensive threat, LeDarral Hollingsworth, was held to 31 yards in 12 carries and fumbled twice.

Quarterback Jason Carr threw for 144 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Antelope Valley quarterback Trymon Redick rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown and threw a touchdown pass.
