PREP ROUNDUP : Foothill Overtakes Newport Harbor

Freshman Robbie Arroyo scored three goals to help Foothill to a 7-5 victory over Newport Harbor in a quarterfinal game of the California State water polo tournament Friday at Stanford University.

Brian Brown added two and Ryan Brown had eight saves for Foothill (18-3), the third-ranked team in Orange County. Newport Harbor (12-10) is ninth.

Brian Brown also scored four goals to lead Foothill to a 14-7 victory over San Jose Lynbrook in the first round earlier Friday. The Knights face Corona del Mar in the semifinals today.

In another tournament game:

Corona del Mar 15, El Toro 8--Adam McFarland scored six goals and James Palda added five goals to lead Corona del Mar (16-4), the county’s top-ranked team, in a quarterfinal. Neil Hueston scored six goals and McFarland and Palda each added two to lead the Sea Kings to an 18-6 victory over Acalanes in the first round.

In nonleague water polo:

Estancia 15, Huntington Beach 6--Eric Wayman scored five goals, Chad Bollenbach added three and Joe Huang scored two to lead host Estancia (18-8).

Saddleback 15, Los Amigos 9--Bret Trezise scored eight goals to break a school record for single season scoring. Trezise, a senior, broke his 1993 record of 127 by one goal. Saddleback is 15-6.

Santa Ana 11, Santa Ana Valley 9--Cesar Macedo scored five goals for Santa Ana (13-8).

Villa Park 15, Downey 4--Brian Pharris had four goals and Peter Cornue added three for seventh-ranked Villa Park (19-6).

Laguna Beach 18, Lompoc Cabrillo 10--Christian Jenson scored eight goals, John Rootlieb and Chris Dornin each added three and Mike Marriner recorded 11 saves to lead host Laguna Beach (18-7).

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

La Quinta 11, Bolsa Grande 10--Linh Wu’s 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 sweep in No. 1 singles was the deciding factor for La Quinta (5-4 in league). Bolsa Grande drops to 13-6, 4-5.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 16, Mission Viejo 2--The No. 1 doubles team of Lisa Panique and Sarah Jarrett swept its sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for Mater Dei (9-9, 5-4).

San Clemente 16, Trabuco Hills 2--Senior Felicity Murphy improved her league record to 25-2 by sweeping in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for San Clemente (12-7, 7-2).
