In the Garden Grove League:
Hernandez, Young win--Franky Hernandez of Santiago and Stacey Young of Pacifica won individual titles and led their teams to victory at Mile Square Park.
Hernandez finished in 15 minutes 20 seconds to edge Rancho Alamitos’ Enrique Meyer (15:24) Garden Grove’s Mike Balderas (15:33) and La Quinta’s Jess Strutzel (15:42) to win his second consecutive league title for the Cavaliers.
Santiago avenged a dual-meet loss to Garden Grove earlier in the season, beating the Argonauts, 30-43. Rancho Alamitos finished third with 73 points.
The Santiago boys have dominated the league recently, winning the last three and four of the last five team titles.
Young, a sophomore, led from the start before finishing in 19:13, 31 seconds ahead of Santiago’s Karla Rojas (19:44) and Rancho Alamitos’ Bernice Carbajal (19:45).
Seven Garden Grove runners finished among the top 16 in the girls’ race, but the Mariners’ strength up front proved to be too much. Pacifica scored 36 points, edging the Argonauts (44) and Santiago (80).
