Montclair Prep Dominates

Lesson learned by Montclair Prep: It’s easy to win if your opponent finishes with minus-68 yards.

The Mounties held California School for the Deaf-Riverside to one first down and two complete passes in a dominant 38-0 nonleague victory Thursday.

Twenty of the Cubs’ 24 rushing plays resulted in negative yardage or no gain.

“Our defense played well and held them in check,” understated Montclair Coach George Giannini, whose team had CSD-R at minus-35 yards in the first half while building a 29-0 lead.

Coaches for both schools agreed to keep the clock continuously running in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Montclair was just as dominant on offense, rushing for 190 yards in 23 carries.

The Mounties scored on their third play from scrimmage on a 31-yard pass play from Robert Neumann to Darrell Dent.

“They did exactly what we were afraid they were going to do,” said Cubs’ Coach Ken Maraj. “They’re a tough team on both sides of the ball.”

Akil Anderson, who rushed for 69 yards in three carries, was pulled early in the second quarter after scoring on a 22-yard run that gave the Mounties a 22-0 lead.

Anderson also set up the Mounties’ second touchdown with a 38-yard run.

Third-string running back Mark Zone had 62 yards in eight carries for Montclair Prep (6-1).

California School for the Deaf fell to 4-3-1.
