In a game marred by more than 250 yards in penalties, two player ejections and a postgame brawl that involved players and fans, visiting Bell-Jeff High emerged with a 27-7 victory over Cathedral in a Santa Fe League contest Saturday afternoon.

The fight broke out when the teams met to shake hands after the game.

“There’s been bad blood between these two schools for years,” said Bell-Jeff assistant Brett Woodlief, who was bleeding from the mouth after being hit during the melee. “I took two or three punches out there and I hate to say it, but I could see this coming from the beginning of the game.”

Richard Szeptycki completed seven of 12 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown for Bell-Jeff (5-4, 4-2), which scored 20 points in the second quarter.
