Second-Half Effort Lifts Brea-Olinda Past Magnolia

Brea-Olinda scored three second-half touchdowns to beat Magnolia, 27-13, in Orange League play Saturday night at Glover Stadium.

The Wildcats (7-1-1, 3-0-1) clinched a Southern Section playoff berth, but they still need a victory on Friday against Valencia to wrap up the league title.

The Sentinels (1-8, 0-4) scored on their first possession on Sean Roy’s three-yard run with 7 minutes 7 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Sentinels held Brea-Olinda at bay the next two possessions, but the Wildcats managed to score in the second quarter.

Running back Jerome Owens, who ran for 170 yards in 28 carries, carried the ball seven times for 56 yards on the drive, setting up a nine-yard pass from Matt Kalcevich to Jacob Freeze with 3:25 left in the half.

The Sentinels had two touchdowns called back by penalties in the last minute of the half, leaving the score tied, 7-7.

The Wildcats looked like a different team in the second half. Owens carried the ball on seven of the Wildcats’ eight plays in their opening drive of the third quarter, capping the drive with a one-yard run on fourth and goal for a 14-0 lead.

Brea-Olinda scored on its next possession when Kalcevich hit Freeze for a 28-yard score.

Magnolia cut the lead to 21-13 with 4:15 left to play, when backup quarterback Josh Reding connected with Eric Webber for a 31-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats capped the scoring when Andy Wirz ran in from one yard with 3:15 remaining.
