Canyon High School quarterback Adam Hoover threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Comanches to a 28-10 Century League victory over Orange Thursday night at El Modena High.

Canyon clinched a playoff spot. The Comanches will await the outcome of Saturday’s game between Villa Park and Santa Ana Valley to determine their league standing.

The Comanches scored on their opening possession, driving 80 yards in seven plays, before Hoover connected with wide receiver Larry Witt on a 15-yard touchdown pass. Orange tied the score midway through the second quarter, as Markus Garza capped a 16 play, 79-yard drive, with a two-yard scoring run.

Jerry Arguello kicked a 46-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 10-7 halftime lead. On the third play of the second half, Canyon took the lead for good when Troy Mills intercepted a pass by Orange’s Andy Laurdisen and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown.

Late in the game, Hoover completed touchdown passes of eight yards to Witt and 23 yards to Greg Jacobs. Jacobs finished the night with five catches for 104 yards, and Mills had four receptions for 73 yards.

Garza rushed for 83 yards in 22 carries for the Panthers. Laurdisen left the game late in the third quarter because of a knee injury suffered while playing safety.
