Leading 21-7 over Costa Mesa Friday night, Laguna Hills had hoped to run out the final 5:16 of its game when officials stopped the clock. That action infuriated Hawk Coach Steve Bresnahan, who was told by referee Bill Hudson that the crowd near the end zone on the Laguna Hills’ sideline was too close to the field and if it didn’t stay back, Laguna Hills would be penalized.

“I don’t know any of those people,” Bresnahan explained forcefully.

The “fans” he didn’t know? The Laguna Hills’ freshman football team.

EYE OF BEHOLDER

After Century won a share of the Empire League championship Thursday with its victory over Kennedy, during which the Centurions nearly gave the game away via fumbles in the fourth quarter, Coach Bill Brown received congratulations and hugs from many of his players.

As one player embraced Brown, he said, “It’s beautiful coach.”

Brown replied, “No, it wasn’t beautiful, but it was a win.”

SCENE OF THE CRIME

Brett Paton’s football career ended at Newport Harbor in 1982, when he broke his leg while playing for El Toro against the host Sailors. The injury left him with a permanent limp.

Paton was on the sidelines Thursday in the first game between the two teams on that field since that night 12 years ago. He’s the coach of the Chargers’ linebackers.
