OUTLOOK
Byars and Western are looking for a fresh start. Byars, who had a record of 64-163 in 10 years at Anaheim, replaces Matt Cavanaugh, who is now an assistant at Cypress High. The Pioneers are trying to rebound from a disastrous season that saw them finish tied for last in the league. With Lindemeyer and Mackie, who averaged 11 and 13 points, Byars has a foundation to build on. What he needs is for Vernon to develop into a point guard. Byars said the guard position is the biggest weakness. Bransetter, Burdett and Casillas were involved in the Southern Section football playoffs but will be counted on to give the Pioneers depth. “I feel we have decent overall ability,” Byars said. “We could be a pretty good team by the time league rolls around. I am concerned about our players’ ability to play as a team, and with the overall attitudes our players have shown at times during the summer.” If Byars’ reputation as a taskmaster takes hold--his Anaheim teams were always known as cheap-steak tough--the attitudes should adjust accordingly.
