OUTLOOK

The Aztecs, moving from the Empire League, are hoping a good summer will carry over into league play. Their strength should be their balance--they have good height, strength and quickness. They do lack varsity experience, and with Marina and Fountain Valley in the league, that’s a glaring weakness. They will be without Kristy Kierulff, their best athlete, who decided to skip basketball and concentrate on club volleyball and track. Foss was an All-Empire League selection, and Gethins is coming back from a knee cartilage tear that forced her out at midseason. Severinsen was the junior varsity most valuable player, and Binkley was that team’s most improved player. Studer played in Europe last year as a foreign-exchange student. Studer could play an important role in Esperanza’s success: the Aztecs must develop a consistent inside game to be a league force.
