OUTLOOK

Borchert returns after a one-year sabbatical. Larry Hirst, who is now one of Borchert’s assistants, led the Chargers to within one victory of a Southern Section championship. Borchert was on hand at The Pond of Anaheim to watch Mater Dei narrowly defeat Edison by six points in the Division I-A championship game. Borchert is excited about this season’s squad, a group that “works harder than any I’ve ever had,” Borchert said. “It could be a little rocky early, but if we hang together, I think we’ll really start to jell by mid-January.” Four of the Chargers’ top seven players--including projected starters Lisotto, Ogas and Kurz--just finished football season, so it will take time for them to get adjusted. Langdon is one of the team’s best outside shooters and Lightman is a good penetrator. “Scoring won’t be a problem,” Borchert said. “If we can defend big people and hold our own on the boards, we’ll be able to compete.”
